Creating a car that stands apart from the crowd in the highly competitive 275 drag radial class is extremely difficult. Now, go to the biggest drag radial event in the country and try to stand out. Nearly impossible, yet this is exactly what Barry Lutz has accomplished with his stunning Outlaw 275 Radial Chevelle.

Over the past three years, Lutz and his friends have been updating his Outlaw 275 Drag Radial Chevelle at his shop in Kansas. What started as a simple 25.3 roll cage updated has snowballed into a complete makeover and the end result in nothing short of remarkable.

Powering this beautiful Chevelle is a 540 cubic inch BBC that was built by Matt Driskell of Driskell Racing Engines. The top end of the combination was tweaked by Mike Stark and CFM Performance.

The big block engine was designed to tolerate the high levels of boost generated from an F2 ProCharger that’s driven by a billet Component Drive System gear drive system from Chris Alston’s Chassisworks. A mechanical fuel pump draws Q16 VP racing fuel from a custom front mounted fuel cell that is vinyl wrapped to resemble Barry’s favorite adult beverage. The fuel is then routed to a set of Allen Kennedy Billet Atomizer injectors where they are controlled by a Fast XFI fuel injection system that was tuned by Jason Rueckert and Scott Smith.

A Mark Micke 2-speed TH400 transmission and M&M custom torque converter has the responsibility of routing the all of this ProCharged power to the TRZ Motorsport fabricated 9-inch housing at the rear of the car. Weld Racing Alumastar wheels have been upgraded with MacFab double bead-locks to enable the Mickey Thompson Pro 275 drag radials to put all of this supercharged power to the ground.

The chassis work and roll cage on this ultra-clean Chevelle was handled by Tim Webb of Webb Racecraft. The Chevelle features TRZ Motorsports front and rear suspension components along with every other A-body fabricated component that TRZ makes. The Chevelle features Menscer Motorsports double adjustable shocks with custom valving at all four corners of the car.  As you can see in the video below, this car definitely hooks.

Although this car weighs in a 3,600lbs, it is still very fast and is definitely a fan favorite. Barry designed and built the rear aluminum wing on his Outlaw Radial Chevelle. It helps when your family owns a sheetmetal fabrication job shop.

The stunning paint job and body work on Barry’s Chevelle was done by Dave Serrault and Derek Kirk. 187 Graphix provided decals and custom designed window lettering for the car, in addition to the vinyl wrapped fuel cell.

A custom lexan grill was built for this Chevelle to help direct air into the F2 Procharger.

Barry’s friend and fellow ProCharged race car owner Scott Smith wired all of the electronics and lighting for the car, including the Fast XFI fuel injection system.

Barry decided to debut the Outlaw 275 Chevelle at the biggest drag radial race in the country, Lights Out IV at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The timing of the race didn’t allow Barry to make any passes on the updated car and engine combination prior to the race in Georgia, but he decided to take his car to Georgia anyway.

While at SGMP, Cal Hartline of Hartline Performance helped with some last minute engine tuning at the track which resulted in a new personal best of 4.75 at 150 MPH for the car. Considering the car tips the scale at a heavy 3,620 lbs, and this was the first time with the new chassis and engine setup, he was very happy with this first outing.

Barry stated; “This car wouldn’t be what it is without the help from my parents, Wife Anna, friends Jeff Tharp, Scott Smith, Brian Rankin, Jason Rueckert, Tim Webb, Mike and Todd Braasch from TRZ, and Sergio Shiffman.
