Here at Power Automedia, we’re fans of all different forms of drag racing and motorsports in general, but each of us seems to have a different “go-to” type of racing we prefer. Some of us like small-tire racing like the X275 and drag radial craze that’s swept the industry over the last few years, others like NHRA Top Fuel, and there are still more that prefer naturally-aspirated racing like NHRA Pro Stock and NMCA N/A 10.5. I’m that guy – there’s nothing like a high-winding, ear-splitting scream towards (and past) 10,000 RPM at a storied facility like Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
So let’s talk about it all – because that’s what we do here at Dragzine.
Our question of the week this week is, what type of drag racing really gets your juices flowing, whether it’s as a spectator or participant? What makes you run for the fence when the class is called?
There are so many different styles of racing, from those mentioned up above to NMRA’s “all-Ford” format that encompasses a number of different small-tire classes, all with different rulesets.
Then you have the races put on by Donald Long and Duck X Productions that take the small-tire format do a different level, with X275, Outlaw Drag Radial, and other radial-equipped cars that try to rotate the earth. Professional-level racing like Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock are on a different level altogether both financially and from a fan perspective – and we haven’t even mentioned the Pro Mod-centric DRL’s and DRA’s yet.
And nitro cars bring yet another dimension to the sport – who can say that the shock-and-awe thunder of a fueler under the lights doesn’t get their blood pumping?
Pro Mods are a class unlike any other – from the Outlaw-style machines of guys like John Stanley that run screw blowers on door cars as they try to rotate the earth, to turbocharged machines like Troy Coughlin’s Corvette – they all have a place in racing.
Or maybe you’re a numbers nerd, who likes to break down a super-close bracket race with a pair of Stock Eliminators to see who’s run further under the index given their super-limited set of rules.
Whatever your passion, there’s surely a place for it within the sport of drag racing. So, what say you?
