You’ve probably figured it out by now, but the Dragzine staff is a real stickler for numbers. If you ask us, big speeds and low elapsed time are (at least) half the equation in drag racing, and in many cases, more exciting for the fan then the side-by-side competition itself. Big numbers put a buzz in the air like no other, and they certainly get people talking in a way that not even a dead-heat drag race can measure up to.
With so many venues and categories these days, there are barriers and records being broken weekly, and this season saw more than its fair share of monster runs that will be long remembered — or in some cases, may remain in the records books unbeaten for some time. We’ve compiled a list of some of these standout passes below that are virtual shoe-in nominees for the “run of the year,” but with so many great runs by so many top-notch racers and cars, the clear winner could be debated forever. So what are we going to do?
Stir a debate.
What do you think was the single greatest run of 2013? Here’s a list of the many big runs, and if we’ve missed any that should be on this list, feel free to write in your vote.
Keith Berry’s incredible 4.193 — the quickest Outlaw Drag Radial pass in history in official competition — with his LSX-powered twin-turbo Corvette. Not just a 315 radial tire record, but the world record for LSX-powered race cars.
John Stanley’s all-time quick door slammer pass at the Street Car Supernationals IX in Las Vegas, at 5.644 seconds, backed up with a later 5.648.
Dave Hance’s 6.106 at 229.55 MPH in testing at the Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk in Mark Wells’ twin-turbocharged Fox body Ford Mustang — the quickest 1/4-mile pass in history by a legal Outlaw 10.5 car.
The 6.89 at 198 MPH posted by Phil Hines in February in his small block Ford-powered, ProCharged Mustang that made him the first racer in history into the six-second zone on 275 drag radials.
West coast racer Greg Seth-Hunters’ 6.041 that reset the all-time record by a production Ford Modular-powered car.
LSX Drag Radial standout Mark Carlyle’s 6.697 at 217.84 MPH in his twin-turbo Corvette at the NMCA World Street Finals in Indianapolis that bettered the previous record for the class by some two-tenths of a second.
Eric Dillard’s 3.684 at 206.42 MPH while shaking down Q80’s brand new Pro Extreme Camaro, marking the first 3.6-second 1/8-mile doorslammer run ever recorded by a turbocharged car.
John Kolivas’ stunning 4.27 at 178 MPH on 275 drag radials with his twin-turbo small block Ford-powered Mustang in Holly Springs, Miss., weighing in at 3,300 lbs.
Tom Bailey’ ridiculous 6.83-second average at Drag Week, led by a best of 6.70, that blew away the previous record for the Unlimited category.
Todd Tutterow’s barrier-shattering 3.99 (the first sub four-second 1/8-mile Outlaw 10.5 pass in history) in testing at the Bahrain International Circuit in Qatar last winter, driving Al-Anabi Racing’s screw-blown C6 Corvette.
European rider Eric Teboul’s 5.12 aboard his rocket-powered motorcycle at the Manufacturers Cup Finals in Florida. This was the quickest run by a two-wheeled machine in drag racing history, despite shutting down well before the finish line and only turning just 264 MPH.
Jason Scruggs’ unreal 3.52 and 219 MPH blasts in his Pro Extreme Corvette at the ADRL World Finals in Houston — both world records in the 1/8-mile for a doorslammer of any kind.
Now it’s time to throw out your two cents: what was the “run of the year?”
