PRI 2014: Davis Technologies’ Profiler Helps Manage Wheelspeed

If it’s legal to run and the team sets it up properly, the Davis Technologies Profiler wheel-speed-management system can be one of the most effective race tools on the drag strip.

Basically, the Profiler is an electronic control device that ensures the desired driveshaft rpm is maintained throughout the run by checking the vehicle performance 1,000 times a second and adjusting the ignition timing to reduce or boost engine power accordingly. Of course, this engine-vehicle relationship may be considered traction control, and often that capability is a no-no in many classes.

The Profiler features a color touch screen and is compatible with popular ECUs and ignition controls.

“The user is any outlaw racer,” says designer Shannon Davis, noting that there are numerous classes that permit this type of technology.

Although there is an optional self-learning traction control function in the box, the majority of users will target a specific wheelspeed curve into the system. This plot can be a mirror of what the team considers a perfect run after pulling data from its Racepak, or the profile can be an average of a few different exceptional runs. The tuner then develops a rainbow of ranges and zones around that curve and decides how much the timing adjusted either way when the vehicle  wheelspeed deviates from the plot.

“If the driveshaft speed is one rpm over, the system can pull a 10th of a degree,” says Davis. “The level of accuracy is what separates it from everything else. Nothing can react this fast.”

The Profiler gives the tuner wide flexibility in managing engine to maintain the desired wheelspeed plot.

If a simple timing adjustment doesn’t correct the wheelspeed fast enough, the Profiler can cut cylinder firings from one to four cylinders. Again, the tuner has complete control over when and how many cylinders will be dropped.

“It’ll never drop the same cylinder twice consecutively to load up the hole,” says Davis. “We’ve run it on nitrous cars with no problem.”

The Profiler is compatible with popular ECUs and ignition controls. It also features a bump box function to help stage the vehicle and a Pro Axe function to help cut better lights. The interface with the PC is wireless, and the unit features a color touch screen.
