One of our favorite classes at this year’s NMRA World Finals event out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, at Beech Bend Raceway – has to be the Coyote Stock class. As a Head’s Up style of racing, the Coyote Stock class evens the playing field for enthusiasts who are on a budget; while bringing out some of the best manual transmission drivers, too.
One individual we met during our first day of our same day coverage was Carlos Sobrino – and boy did he meet those standards we mentioned above. Sobrino owns that Fox body with a crazy exterior pictured above, and it’s one of the most competitive cars in the class.
“The car has a unique color scheme, because I hate show cars,” Sobrino said. “It’s different – it gets a lot of attention. But the most important thing about it is, kids really like it. Adults might not get it, but kids really dig it – and that’s more important than anybody above the age of 12.
Sobrino touched on building a Coyote Stock car the right way the first time, and how it’s important in this competition. “It’s got good parts in it. Once you get those quality parts, like a Fidanza clutch, UPR suspension, etc – you stick with it, and make it work. My last clutch only lasted only a year and a half, and I do a LOT of passes. I test quite a bit, and I beat the living snot out of the car.”
“This new clutch lasts,” Sobrino continued. “It forgives, and it’s an absolutely amazing setup. The damn thing is so soft [referring to the pedal], it feels like a hydraulic clutch. I’ve got at least 75 passes on this setup.”
Sobrino is currently ranked fourth in points in the battle for this year’s event, although his final position is to be determined. Stick with us as we bring you updates on cars like Sobrino’s at this years NMRA World Finals event!
