ADRL SuperCar Showdown To Bring Together Global Automakers

The American Drag Racing League today unveiled additional details regarding their all-new SuperCar Showdown category, which series officials report has received an overwhelming reception from the racing community and the automotive manufacturers over the last week.

“It’s absolutely incredible, actually,” ADRL President Tim McAmis said. “We never dreamed the ADRL SuperCar Showdown would draw this kind of attention in such a short period. The ADRL staff went from hopes of a good response to devoting all our time to answering phone calls and e-mails from sponsors, racers and even the manufacturers themselves. Everyone is thrilled with the fact eliminations for the class will be conducted on Saturday night at our events in front of the prime spectator crowd. They love the close relationship we plan to build with the dealership outlets. Everybody wants to be involved with the ADRL SuperCar Showdown.”

Although initially believed to be a category focused on the race-bred machines being offered by Ford, Chrysler, and Chevrolet, for Stock and Super Stock competition, those involved in the creation of the SuperCar Showdown indicate this is anything but a class centered solely on the Detroit creations.

“The initial excitement of the announcement centered on the thrill of seeing the Fords, Dodges and Chevys waging war,” said ADRL announcer Bret Kepner. “However, nowhere in our original press release did we state the ADRL SuperCar Showdown would be restricted to American cars. In fact, we have spent an inordinate amount of time to determine how many vehicles worldwide could actually be represented in this series and we’ve uncovered more than 60 different factory-produced cars that could compete in the class.”

McAmis, Kepner, and class racing standout Jeff Teuton have pored over the wide-ranging vehicle makes encompassing virtually every automaker around the globe, using a manufacturer horsepower rating of 400 horsepower as their estimated target to remain competitive alongside the factory race cars from the “big three.” What they’ve come up with is a list of vehicles ranging from $34,000 Ford Mustang GT’s to the $2.6 million Aston Martin One-77 and $2.7 million Bugatti Veyron.

The Veyron will indeed run 9.80’s in stock trim, but realistically, it’s unlikely that anyone will be willing to modify a $220,00 Porsche 911 GT2RS or their AWD Cayenne crossover, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Lamborghini, Bentley, or Ferrari, but it’s nice to know that the option is there. If necessary, we like our crow cooked medium-well.
