Going up against many cars with more than double the displacement of his tiny 2.2L turbocharged Honda engine, Indiana racer Carey Bales turned in his best-ever elapsed time at the recent World Cup Finals Import Vs. Domestic race at Maryland International Raceway.

During the qualifying sessions for the event, Bales drove his 2004 Honda S2000 to a personal-best 7.491 elapsed time at only 159 MPH, letting off at halftrack on the pass. The car has been a best of 182 MPH in the past, and Bales says it’s not even turned up all the way yet. Even so, he has the fastest car in NHRA Super Stock history and lays claim to being the only car in the 7-second zone using an 8.5-inch tire and four or six-cylinder engine, although the car currently runs on a 28×10.5W tire.

The four-cylinder InlinePRO/Allenbuilt 2.2L F22c engine makes north of 1,300 horsepower, and Bales credits much of its performance to the AEM Electronics Infinity Engine Management System, along with a host of other AEM parts that keep it running in tip-top shape. The car runs a set of AEM’s Smart Coils, 4 channel wideband oxygen sensor system, 4 channel EGT system, and a full complement of AEM’s sensors that help Bales to keep tabs on the engine during a quarter-mile blast. The engine is pumped up by one of Borg-Warner’s Airwerks Twinscroll S400SX 76mm turbochargers, which is controlled by a pair of TiAL MV-S wastegates and a TiAL Q 50mm blowoff valve. A Kinsler intake manifold and Full Race turbo manifold get the air in and out of the engine.

“Our car started life on an AEM series 1, then a series 2, now an Infinity. There were some nice changes between the series 1 and series 2, but the Infinity is an entirely different animal with endless flexibility and control. There hasn’t been one thing we have asked it to do that it couldn’t. One thing on our car that is very important is starting line RPM and boost control. The Infinity is so precise with this control that we always have extremely consistent power and RPM when we dump the clutch. The boost control from the starting line on is spot on and can be controlled in any manner that you’d like. Another great thing is everything that it can control,” says Bales.

The Infinity simplifies the starting and race processes, leaving Bales to worry about driving the car and not much else.

“Everything is integrated with the factory controls which is really nice as I don’t have to worry about turning fans, pumps, loggers, etc. on. It’s all automated and always works!” he says.

Bales isn't afraid to drive this bad boy, either; check out that G-force GF2000 in the transmission tunnel!

“Infinity’s fail safes are incredible as well. Several times we have had fuel pressure issues that in most cases would have wiped out an engine. Infinity catches these issues and recalibrates the fuel table and not only saves the engine, but allows you to complete your pass and potentially a round win,” he explains.

Bales credits the support he’s received from the team at Nth Moto and Devin Pearce and the rest of the AEM team in giving the car and combination consistency and accuracy.

“On our personal best pass we lifted at about 1000′. The car was getting loose. The track wasn’t great for us so we ended up turning the car down a bit and ran a couple 7.5-7.6 passes. It’s got a 7.2 in it as it sits for sure. Just have to make a few chassis changes to get a bit more bit up top,” says Bales.
