Street legal drag racing’s ageless wonder, 84-year old Willard Kinzer, was injured in a crash on Thursday at the Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. during a test session leading up to the Quick Fuel Technologies NMCA Muscle Car Nationals, according to a report from the NMCA Event Coverage staff.
[2]Kinzer, the drilling magnate from Allen, Ky. who has become one of the biggest stories in the sport over the last two seasons, was testing the Super Street 10.5W ford Mustang that he debuted at the recent NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl in Joliet, ill. when, according to the report, his machine made a hard move near the 1/8-mile and impacted the guardrail. The force of the collision then hung the throttle body open on the twin turbocharged machine, sending it well beyond the finish stripe before coming to rest.
According to Kinzer’s tuner Patrick Barnhill, Kinzer suffered broken ribs and a partially punctured lung, and after a night’s stay in the hospital, was back home in Allen over the weekend and resting comfortably. Barnhill indicated the car is repairable. Kinzer still has the former David Wolfe-driven stock suspension Mustang in his arsenal, which he relayed to us in Joliet would be kept as a backup option to the new car.
If anyone can make a full comeback in their mid-80’s, it’s Kinzer. After all, what would you expect from a daredevil that took up the injury-riddled sport of motorcycle hill climbing in his 50’s and has been nearly 240 mph in a 3,000-plus pound doorslammer on 10.5-inch tires in his 80’s?
