In May, we shared with you a feature article on European drag racer and custom fabricator Wayne Allman and his wild creation known as the “Mental Breakdown.” Allman’s unique and undoubtedly one-of-a-kind ride is similar in ways to what is commonly referred to as an altered, albeit with the cockpit situated out over the front wheels. But even more “out there” than that is the chopped up Volkswagen van body draped over the front end, with the supercharged HEMI engine resting out back very much like that of a dragster. We’ve seen nose-driven Top Alcohol Dragsters here in the states, but the “Mental Breakdown” puts a whole new twist on things.
Allman passed along some video footage of his outing with the car for some tests hits last month at the Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire England. Allman was able to complete a couple of nice, smoky burnouts, followed by a sixty-foot squirt that netted a 1.2-second clocking. An issue with the reverser in the Lenco transmission kept Allman from making a representative pass, however. If you’re like us, you’re probably as eager to see what this thing can do with the butterflies cracked wide open as Allman himself is to pilot such a concoction.
