Back in December, Justin “Big Chief” Shearer of Street Outlaws fame broke the internet when he revealed the swoopy Pro Mod replacement for his beloved Pontiac LeMans. The ‘Crowmod’, as it was coined, took social media by storm when it was unveiled at the PRI Show, but the car was only just beginning to be assembled at that point. Now, the car is complete and this weekend, Shearer hauled the Firebird-bodied hot rod down to the uber sticky Northstar Dragway in Denton, Texas to get in a few test hits before making the haul to Lights Out VI this coming weekend in south Georgia.
The test session started out well, with the crew chipping away at the elapsed time in sizeable chunks, ending up with a best of 4.36 at 175 mph in only three full passes on the green chassis and 315 drag radials. Shearer had hoped to get some more passes in, but on the 4.36 pass, the car backfired as he went through the traps, resulting in pretty significant engine damage and a premature end to the test session.
However, as diehard racers are known to do, Chief immediately began making phone calls and thrashing to secure parts to get the Poncho bullet back together for the biggest radial race on the planet. Luckily for Shearer, his engine builder, Rodney Butler of Butler Performance Pontiac, has all of the necessary pieces on hand and his shop is conveniently en route to South Georgia Motorsports Park, so hopefully all will go as planned and the Crowmod will make it’s competition debut this weekend.
Thanks to Aaron Gonzalez, known to most for his excellent videos on his NXGonzo YouTube Channel, we can see that there is definitely some elapsed time left in the tuneup as the car leaves relatively soft, though it does spin up nicely out the back door. Hopefully Chief, Butler and the Midwest Street Cars crew can get the bullet patched up in time and we will see him in action at SGMP this weekend.
