According to a report from WALB, South Georgia Motorsports Park was placed under guard this morning by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, who sent deputies to the Adel, Georgia facility. According to the report, investigators said that the property owners owed at least $90,000 to the state in unpaid taxes.
State officials served a search warrant Sunday afternoon for the track’s financial records. Track co-owner Kimberly Wood has been charged with theft by taking for sales and theft by taking withholding, and was considered on the run as of this writing. Her husband and track co-owner Rowland Wood has not been charged as of 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The investigation is being led by the Georgia Department of Revenue, and although the track was closed on Monday, it is reported that racing action scheduled for this upcoming weekend will take place as planned.
SGMP’s all-concrete quarter-mile facility is home to Duck X Productions’ two radial races each season as well as many other drag races and professional test sessions held there throughout the year. There is also a half-mile paved oval on the property, and SGMP has gotten rave reviews from racers and fans alike over the last several years as its prominence has been raised in the national motorsports consciousness.
It’s a shame to see this happen. There’s still a chance it will blow over and all be a misunderstanding, but once the tax man comes callin’, it’s typically all over but the shouting. We shall see, but one thing’s for certain, we’ll be paying close attention to this developing story.
