Car Feature – B&B builds 2010 Camaro for Hendrick Motorsports

While most racing enthusiasts know Hendrick Motorsports for their dominance in the NASCAR world, the Hendrick family got their start drag racing a 1931 Chevrolet in the mid-60’s at tracks around Virginia and North Carolina. Lessons learned on that home built Chevy was the seed that would eventually grow into the 80 dealer franchise Hendrick Automotive Group and multiple NASCAR champion Hendrick Motorsports.

Hendrick has always been associated with performance Chevrolets and with the much-anticipated arrival of the 2010 Camaro, Hendrick Automotive acquired the first car off the Oshawa assembly line, a Black Super Sport model. On March 16, 2009, Rick Hendrick drove VIN#0001, off the assembly line at GM Canada’s Oshawa Car Assembly Plant. The historic car is currently parked at one of Hendrick’s Chevrolet dealerships in North Carolina.

To celebrate the return of the 2010 Camaro and explore the potential of the new platform in drag racing applications, Hendrick commissioned B&B Race Cars to build the ultimate drag Camaro, serialized by B&B as #0001, based on GM Performance Parts body-in-white.

B&B Race Cars had years of experience building Camaros and other GM Super Stock cars. In addition to building fast cars, the shop has received a number of best engineered awards at NHRA national and divisional events. The Hohenwald, Tennessee based shop had built the first NMCA legal Pro Stock 2010 Camaro for Don Baskin’s Tennessee based team. The new car, driven by Greg Delaney, would go on to finish second to Skip Baskin’s 1966 Nova in 2010 Pro Stock points. Impressive considering the new car went to the finals in its debut event at Maple Grove. A few months later the car won Pro Stock class at the St. Louis NMCA event.

Starting from a body-in-white, B&B Race Cars constructed a chrome moly chassis that includes a NHRA legal 25.3 cage. The rear suspension features a B&B built 9-inch fabricated rear end with DEWCO center section and Mark Williams axles. Santhuff coil-over shocks are mounted to an adjustable four-link suspension. For the front suspension, B&B built a tubular front k-member featuring Santhuff struts and rack and pinion steering. Other updates include Mark Williams front and rear drag brakes and twin mount parachutes. For rolling stock the Camaro sits on Weld Racing wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson ET tires.

While building the Camaro, B&B worked with the Hendrick Motorsports carbon fiber production shop for many of the interior trim pieces. Hendrick Motorsports is known for their innovations in carbon fiber seats that many of the NASCAR drivers use. The Hendrick Motorsports carbon team enjoyed the challenge of making carbon components for the special Camaro build. The car features carbon fiber rear wheel tubs, transmission tunnel and floor panels plus several other unique carbon parts.

Powering the Camaro is a 762 cubic inch mountain motor big block from Fulton Competition. Fulton engines power some of the quickest door slammers in ADRL and Outlaw 10.5 drag racing so the Spartanburg, South Carolina engine builder was a natural choice for the project. The 1000+ horsepower engine is topped by a Fulton sheetmetal intake manifold with twin race carburetors. Forcing air to the massive twin carburetors is a bullet style hood scoop. Transferring all the power to the rear-end is a Rossler transmission.

To match the VIN# 001 Camaro production car, the B&B Race Cars in house paint shop painted the car Black with orange rally stripes.

In early January, Darren Breaud delivered the completed car to Hendrick Motorsports in Concord, North Carolina and received a full NASCAR shop tour. After looking over the car, the Hendrick Motorsports crew said that, “The craftsmanship is second to none and it’s too nice to race.”

With the year long 2010 Camaro build complete and delivered, B&B looks forward to working with Hendrick Motorsports on other projects in the near future.
