Cary Goforth is putting his Jerry Haas Race Cars ’09 Chevrolet Cobalt “out to pasture.” Goforth will be leaving his shop in Holdenville, OK tonight to pick up a brand new Jerry Haas Race Cars-built Pontiac GXP tomorrow morning. The Cobalt qualified third in what was likely its final race last weekend at the Kansas National Guard Independence Drags VI in Topeka, KS., but the car has begun to show its age. The Dean’s Casing Service team has been chasing an issue with the car that’s caused problems coming out of the stage beams, and only yesterday, as they were disassembling the car, did they find the issues. Upon removing the bellhousing, some slack components were discovered inside that were affecting the cars’ reaction times.
“This new car is going to have big shoes to fill,” exclaimed Cary. The younger Goforth has had a solid season, going to two final rounds out of four races and winning the opner in Houston. And the only thing that’s kept him out of the other two were holeshot losses. Despite discovering issues in the bellhousing, Cary knows “if the new car doesn’t fix the (reaction time) problem, it’s got to be me.” In either case, the Goforth team as a whole agrees that three holeshot losses are unacceptable and Cary has been putting in time at home on the practice tree to work on his reaction times. As the ADRL nears the halfway point in the season each round loss becomes more important in terms of the championship. Cary is currently second in the points chase, just seven back from leader Pete Berner.
The Goforth team is bringing a new car into the mix at a time where they expect the ADRL Extreme Pro Stock class to begin a transformation. Says Cary, “no one runs these cars like NHRA Pro Stock cars, but that’s about to change.” Cary, Dean, and the rest of the Dean’s Casing Service team continue to make laps at Tulsa Raceway Park between the events on the schedule and they firmly believe that with a little testing and a new race car, “we’ll be quicker and we’ll be faster, and that’s bad news for everybody out there.” Look for the competition debut of Cary’s new GXP at the next stop on the ADRL tour as the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI, June 15-16.
