Cecil County Dragway set to kick off season opener of for heads up racing

Mo Hall is one of the heavy hitters in Outlaw 10.5. He relies on Fulton nitrous power.

Cecil County Dragway finds itself nestled in a small corner of Rising Sun, Maryland. Over the past few years Jim Halsey with the help of Dave O’Donnell have been working on expanding their Saturday night Street Car Shootout. It has grown dramatically – bring some of the fastest and most competitive cars in the country to this monthly event. They run everything from Outlaw 10.5 to a host of index classes and always have a great turnout for their loyal fans and racers.

This Saturday will kick off their 2010 season and for some it will mean a bittersweet return to action. One of those people is Joe Newsham, who went for a horrific ride last season at the Shakedown and in the end totaled his Mustang – as well as being pretty banged up himself as a result of the crash. Joe and his crew from J&E Performance have worked hard to get back on track with the Camaro that they purchased from Elliot Thompson. Newsham will now have to try and regain his momentum which lead him to the championship last season. As always he will have plenty of big guns aimed at him in the form of Mo Hall, Doug Harris, TJ Kasper and many more.

Steve Thompson has the ability to be the spoiler in 275 Drag Radial with his nitrous assisted small block.

Drag Radial, 8.50 Index and 275 Drag Radial will top off the heads up racing at this years events and these classes aim to please. Drag Radial has always been heated between Alex Vrettos – who picked up the championship last season – and guys like Paul Major, Scott Bitzer, and newcomer Bill Dutka. The competition will be tight with these guys looking for more power all winter and Dutka is one of those who found a way to do so. He hopes to get to the front of the pack with his Chevrolet Malibu this season with the help of a new big block Chevrolet and twin turbochargers.

275 Drag Radial is a the newest class that has been added to the Shootout and these guys love to please the crowd. Having the opportunity to compete on the big stage is an honor for the likes of Don Barnett and Marc Schankweiler who are looking to find their way into the winners circle this year. There are also a few new cars that will be looking to spoil the party for the Cecil regulars and things may just get a little ‘Corupt’ when Konstantine Zografos shows up in his newly constructed Mustang.

Mike Pyott is looking to claim his spot at the top of the field in 8.50 Index.

8.50 Index is one of my personal favorites because it is a true drivers competition. One you have to be fast to run the 8.50 Index but you better be on the tree and on your A-game to take the win. There is plenty of wheels up action to please the crowds. Mike Pyott is one of those who has been working hard and testing early this season to find the perfect tune. Having his fair share of problems over the past two seasons means that a win will have been hard earned. 8.50 racers have had to compete with TJ Kasper in past seasons as he was busy winning championships but with his stepping behind the wheel of the old Tim Lynch Mustang in Outlaw 10.5 it may be a whole new ballgame this season.

Come on out to Cecil County Dragway this Saturday and enjoy some of the very best racing in the country. The weather is calling to be picture perfect with temperatures in the low 80’s.
