The Outlaw 10.5 class was always the quickest and fastest of the small-tire categories in drag racing, but in recent years it’s fallen behind the elite Drag Radial cars, and thus relinquished its coveted role. But the class has seen a big jump in performance of late, pushing it back into contention with the radial crowd for the outright record. The top teams cracked into the 3.90 zone last year and now the record has been lowered even more via the Mobley Motorsports team. Chuck Ulsch ripped off the new record at Capital Raceway in Maryland this past weekend, smashing deeper into the 3.90 zone.
The C7 from Vanishing Point Race Cars is absolutely no joke and is packed with the best chassis technology available. Sticking out from the hood is a rather intimidating Brad Anderson HEMI wearing a big PSI screw supercharger that has motivated the C7 to a boatload of low four-second eighth-mile laps and even a few in the threes in its debut season.
At the Capital Raceway, Ulsch had his blown C7 running like a very angry bracket car, recording a string of low four-second runs before he and the Gil Mobley crew turned the wick way up. With the car set on kill, Ulsch starting clicking off three-second passes trying to keep up with Outlaw 10.5 kingpin Mike Decker Jr., who had clicked off a new world record of 3.95.
During eliminations, Ulsch ripped off a booming 3.94 at over 188 mph on a pass that looked a little lazy down low, but sill bested Decker Jr.’s number. Based on what we’ve seen, the Ulsch and the Mobley Motorsports team may have enough on tap to punch the C7 into the 3.80 range sooner rather than later. Will we see Outlaw 10.5 become the quickest small tire class on the planet again this year?
