Promoter Larry Thompson and his Custom T’s of DC Racing invaded Maryland International Raceway (MDIR) for its 5th Annual DoorSlammer Nationals event which continues to grow in size and status each and every event. This year’s one-day Memorial Weekend extravaganza featured a high turnout of cars, fans, fun and sunshine for the event which features a combination of grudge racing action, No Time battles, Test-n-Tune shakedowns, bikes as well as class competition for Top Sportsman and Fast by Francis Outlaw 632 Shootout racers.
The main event; grudge racing brought the large crowd to its feet on multiple occasions as on-track announcer “Pro Stock Joe” and his famous “Now You Know What I Know” slogan stirred them into a near frenzy with each pair coming to the line in this exciting and unpredictable outlaw racing format. There were multiple thrilling big-time match-ups during the “Locked In – Afterdark Underground” feature from 6-10 PM.
In class eliminations, 36 competitors entered to win $2,000 Top Sportsman Shootout sponsored by quartermilebrothers.com. It was an all Virginia final with Larry Bowles of Charlottesville, in his ’88 Camaro came out victories cutting a .004 reaction time in the final combined with a 5.107 ET in the 1/8 mile competition on a 5.09 dial to take out Ricky Tibbs of Manassas and his ’87 Thunderbird.
By all accounts, when the event was completed, all fans and racers left with a sense of satisfaction and community in what is almost as much of a “place to be” as it is about the completion.
The annual DoorSlammer Nationals event is one of three Custom T’s showcase races featured at MDIR during the ’15 season. Be sure to be at the other Custom T’s events on August 8th for Afterdark Underground as well as the Labor Day Grudge Fest finale on September 6.
