Dare To Be Different: Eight-Second ’68 AMX Race Car

[1]

Here’s something you don’t see every day: a 1968 AMC AMX drag car; and it’s for sale. This tube chassis AMX has a full fiberglass body and looks more like the batmobile than your normal bracket racing machine. Adding to the lightweight features, it has lexan windows and carbon fiber interior. Even the drivers seat is carbon fiber. The chassis has a 25.1E certification and is legal to run as quick as 6.00. A 418-cubic inch AMC engine with heads from Indy Cylinder Heads powers this wild ride, and rather than the popular mechanical fuel injection, this engine get it’s fuel via an electronic fuel injection system. The fuel of choice is methanol with some nitrous oxide added for good measure.

A unique feature on this vehicle is the custom cowl hood scoop that feeds the throttle body. A dry sump oiling system is being used and a header evac system gets rid of excessive crankcase pressure. One great safety item found on this race car is a Racecraft fire system, which is a great idea for any race car.

The quarter mile has been covered in 8.7 seconds at 164 mph naturally aspirated by this AMX. For consistency, an air shifter makes that 1-2 shift for the Powerglide transmission. Maple Grove Raceway and Cecil County Dragway are the stomping grounds for this one of a kind machine.  Running in the Super Pro E.T. Bracket class in the NHRA’s Northeast Division is pretty tough in a doorslammer like this, as the lanes are usually filled with dragsters and only a hand full of doorcars.
