NMRA Coyote Stock racer Drew Lyons is beginning to see the fruits of his years of labor. Lyons racked up his second win in a row, as well as his second win ever in NMRA competition, after nearly a decade of trying. Lyons has been a regular in a few NMRA classes over the years -most recently Coyote Stock.
Until reaching Atlanta, Lyons had probably best known in Coyote Stock for some final round appearances and his bumper dragging viral videos. Bring on board Bruce Hemminger for a crew chief and advisor, as well as getting clutch tuning support from Cale Aronson at Ace Racing Clutches, Lyons is now a of a serious threat than ever before in Coyote Stock.
“We did not make any major changes to the car over the winter” Lyons says. The car is still running the same engine, Team Z Motorsports suspension, and a clutch from Ace. “I have been working with Bruce to get the chassis right, we’ve calmed down the big wheelies some, and have the car working right.”
Everyone racing in Coyote Stock has learned the importance of clutch tuning. Lyons says that Cale Aronson’s advice has been pivotal to getting the car dialed in properly. “Cale has been great as far as providing support, and working with us to get the clutch setup just right” says Lyons.
After resetting the Coyote Stock ET record last weekend, and winning in the final round against “Farmer” Steve Gifford, Lyons sits narrowly at the top of the points in the Coyote Stock field. Just 35 points separate Lyons and Gifford, and the season is now half way over. “Steve is a tough competitor, he’s probably better on the tree than anyone else in the class, and if things continue to play out like they have, this entire season could come down to the final round at the World Finals,” says Lyons.
A final round shootout for the ’15 Coyote Stock title would be something we’d love to see, whether it’s Lyons vs Gifford, or two others. We’ll be watching the Coyote Stock class closely as the rest of the season shapes up.
