Looking to own a definitive and iconic piece of drag racing history? Sure, many restored race cars go across the auction blocks each and every year, but it doesn’t get much more legendary in this sport than “Jungle Jim” Liberman, and one lucky bidder over on eBay is going to have one heck of a discussion piece in the form of this original Liberman-owned and driven 1975 Chevrolet Monza Funny Car that has been meticulously restored to its original look and configuration.
This car was originally built in 1974 by Rollie Lindblad of Lindblad Chassis in Northbridge, MA and purchased new by Liberman. It was constructed with a slantnose ’74 Vega body, which Jungle rebodied over the winter of ’74-75 with this – the original Monza body. Jungle campaigned the car for a brief time before selling it to another legend in the Funny Car ranks – Bruce Larson – who ran it in his familiar “USA-1” colors. Several years later it was sold to Chuck Etchells and campaigned as the “Future Force” nitro flopper.
The cars’ chassis was located in Georgia, while the body was found several hundred miles away in Connecticut, and both went through a rigorous restoration process, with over 400 hours of work done on the body, finished in PPG candy apple colors under a urethane clear coat in the original “Revell’s Jungle Jim” scheme. the tin work in the body is all new and finished in a black anodize just as it was in 1975.
Proving the cars authenticity, the seller holds a copy of the bill of sale from Liberman to Larson and Larson to Etchells, as well as a letter of authenticity from Lindblad himself. The car is being auctioned as a roller with no engine or transmission, and it’s just begging for a cackling HEMI between the framerails.
