2011 has been a busy year for Ford, who has rolled out several new vehicles including the Focus, Explorer, and BOSS 302 Mustang. With the year coming to an end, and the L.A. Auto Show right around the corner though, we think Ford has saved the best tidbits for last. We are especially excited to see what the refreshed Mustang looks like, and what new power options will be on tap.
Up on the official Ford Racing Facebook page are images and an announcement that the 2013 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is already “under development,” and Ford Racing is already taking orders.
There are big changes planned for the 2013 Cobra Jet Mustang, chief among them the availability of 5.0 powertrains. The 2012 Cobra Jet only offered either a naturally-aspirated or supercharged 5.4 liter engine, but for 2013 supercharged and naturally-aspirated versions of the 5.0 engine will also be available.
This new engine option will allow drag racers to participate in a wider range of events. Ford Racing is also planning “minor refinements” of the Cobra Jet all around, from suspension to interior. They are also looking at “cost effective” ways to lower the weight of the Cobra, which probably means they are avoiding lightweight materials like carbon fiber instead are focusing on removing excess weight.
Sounds like the 2013 Cobra Jet is already shaping up to be a heavy hitter. And it better be, because the competition is fiercer than ever before.
