Ford Racing announced the details of the upcoming 2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet factory drag racing package cars on Wednesday, boasting a host of new color options, along with some minor and not-so minor changes, such as a new transmission and a new parachute mount.
You may recall back in November during our coverage of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas that Ford Racing had pulled the wraps off a new twin-turbocharged Cobra Jet concept that had the media and the class racing world abuzz. There was plenty of speculation that the car would indeed find its way into production with this engine and power adder offering as an option, despite no inclination or official word since the unveiling that it would or wouldn’t be built. Well, it appears that, at least for this go-around, the twin-turbo engine package has been scrapped from the final production plans, perhaps having not gained approval for competition by the NHRA Technical Department.
By and large, the 2014 Cobra Jet will follow the technical specifications of the 2013 model year FR500CJ, albeit with a new 3-speed automatic transmission option with an SFI-approved bellhousing. Ford Racing has also added a new parachute mount for racer exceeding the 150 mph threshold. The engine offering will again be a 5.0L TiVCT V8 topped with a Ford Racing/Whipple 2.9L supercharger utilizing a 3.25-inch pulley and fully CNC ported cylinder heads. The Cobra Jet will again feature the usual lightened body assembly panels, electric power steering, a complete SFI-certified and NHRA-legal roll cage, Recaro racing seats, and a special Ford Racing suspension geometry optimized for drag racing.
With the new model will come two new color choices, including the increasingly popular Gotta Have It Green and a Cobra Jet exclusive Flat Black. The White color option will carry over from the 2013 model, making five total color/decal options available. These include two Gotta Have It Green models (one with a all-black decal and the other with a blue and white decal), Flat Black (with a red-accented black or blue and white decal), and the White with a red-accented black decal.
Ford Racing will once again produce a limited run of just fifty Cobra Jets for the 2013 model year, with a base MSRP price of $97,990. As they have since the first FR500CJ was released in 2008, each car will be serialized for collectibility. Production on the 2014’s is scheduled to begin in July.
As always, with just fifty cars slated to be built, the 2014 Cobra Jets will be a rare item to get your hands on, but already, one seller, the Victory Ford Dealership in Dyersville, Iowa, has placed their reserved spot on the list to buy one of these cars up to the highest bidder at auction on eBay. Their Cobra Jet, No. 24, is being offered at a starting bid price of $105,980, which is a staggering $8,000 over the already lofty MSRP price. But again, these are rare cars, and if you really want one, it just might cost you.
According to the listing, you get your choice of the color and the graphics package of the five available options that suit your tastes. After the car has been assembled and completed, rather than pick it up at the dealership, you also get the enviable opportunity to ceremoniously pick the car up at the assembly plant in Dearborn, Mich.
