Each year from March through October, Pro Modified racing standout Frankie Taylor is intent and focused on the task of winning races and championships in the American Drag Racing League, ultimate of doorslammer racing venues where he’s a former champion of the Pro Extreme category. But interspersed between those series dates and following the conclusion of the World Finals in Dallas, the racer famously known as “The MadMan”  returns to his roots by kicking back and having some fun racing in his own backyard with the Texas Outlaw Pro Modified Association that he once ruled before hitting the road with the ADRL.

Last weekend, the exciting TOPMA series was invited to be a part of the Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA Lone Star Shootout at the Royal Purple Raceway in Houston, where these three-second, 1/8 mile machines would headline the fight card for the weekend. With racing in his veins and an empty schedule, Taylor and company headed for Houston to nab a Wally and some cash.

Taylor showed some vulnerability in qualifying as he didn’t make it into the final eight-car qualified field until the last of three sessions, but once race day rolled around, Taylor’s Davis Technologies-backed Corvette was not t be deterred.

Taylor’s supercharged mount disposed of Jeffrey Cummins and his monster, nitrous-fed 855 cubic inch Camaro in the first round, 3.98 to a slowing 5.59, then No. 1 qualifier Todd Martin in the semifinals, 3.82 to a 3.90, and fellow Pro Extreme star and Texas native Brandon Pesz in the final round, 3.83 to an off-pace 4.19.
