Garrett, Manley Help Power One Of The Baddest 2JZ Engines

Toyota’s venerable 2JZ inline six cylinder powerplant has long a staple in sport compact drag racing, but over the years, the powerplant has earned itself an impressive reputation in mainstream drag racing opposite of engines with two and three times the displacement — as evidenced recently by an incredible 5.7-second run by a 2JZ-powered doorslammer last month.

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 8.31.23 PMHelping to power many of the newest and baddest of the 2JZ drag racing engine builds has been Manley Performance, one of the leading manufacturers of pistons, connecting rods, crankshafts, valves, and many other high performance engine components. Manley Performance recently developed new 2618 alloy pistons and 4340 Turbo Tuff connecting rods, both of which were put to the test in an engine built by Real Street Performance, who provided input to Manley’s designed and engineering team to produce a bulletproof set of key short block parts.

Manley’s 2JZGTE pistons have moly coasted skirts with an offset wrist pin design (chrome moly or 9310 alloy) for quiet start-ups with premium steel top rings. The pistons are designed for +1mm valve sizes. The Pro Series Turbo Tuff connecting rods, which were designed specifically for high horsepower boosted and nitrous applications, are an I-beam design forged from 4340.

The end result of this specific build is a staggering 1,851.4 horsepower and 1,080.4 lb-ft of torque at 9,000 rpm with a Garrett GTX55 18R 88 mm turbo, with a peak torque output of 1,111 lb-ft at 8,500 rpm. Without getting scientific, that’s certainly enough power to push a lightweight door car way down into the six-second zone.
