Chevrolet’s 2013 COPO Camaro, with just 69 built and sold for the year, are one of the rarest production vehicles in the industry, and customers are willing to stand in line and pay a hefty price to get their hands on one. Over the weekend, a now-internationally famous hot rod shop banked on their name adding collectable value to the price of a COPO when they rolled one of the sleek factory-built racing machines across the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Reno Tahoe “Hot August Nights” auction [2] in “The Biggest Little City In The World”.
Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman, stars of the Discovery Channel’s hit reality show “Fast ‘N Loud” and the faces behind the world renowned Gas Monkey Garage [3], auctioned off COPO Camaro No. 041 at the Reno auction, fetching a final sale price of $137,500, nearly $50,000 above the base price from Chevrolet. the Camaro, a 2013 model part of Chevrolet’s second limited-run of the popular Super Stock and Stock Eliminator machines, features the silver exterior color with black accents and interior, and sports the naturally aspirated 427 cubic inch engine combination under the hood.
According to the auction documentation, Rawlings assisted in the build of the Camaro at the GM plant in Detroit, and the car features the Gas Monkey garage logo on all of the torque stamps, making it a truly one-of-a-kind vehicle from what was already a rare 1-of-69 piece. The complete buildup and the drag strip testing of the car is reportedly to be featured in an upcoming episode of Fast ‘N Loud.
The Chevrolet COPO Camaro is the second coming of the COPO name, which stands for Central Office Production Order. This was Chevrolet’s special ordering system that dealers used in the 1960’s to build high performance car models that couldn’t be found anywhere else. In 2012 and 2013, GM built 69 of these cars to commemorate the COPO heritage, with true-bred racing machines built in-house specially engineered for competitive drag racing.
