Goodguys’ Marc Meadors Goes Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car Racing

Pro Modifieds and Funny Cars are largely considered the two most challenging vehicles to drive in all of drag racing, requiring a skillset that ranges from pure finesse to all-out, fearless man-handling. Both certainly take a high degree of fortitude just to climb into, never mind be successful at.

So which one is tougher to wheel? That’s up for debate, and only those who have driven both can say with authority. And this year, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association President Marc Meadors is getting a pretty grasp on how a full-bodied door slammer differs from a nitro-burning Funny Car.

In recent seasons, the Danville, California native has been campaigning one of the baddest Pro Modified cars in the nation out on the west coast, typically running with the West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified Association with his screw-blown, Brad Anderson-powered “Pure Hell 2” 1969 Camaro built by Tim McAmis Race Cars. Meadors was consistently among the quickest full-bodied cars in the world with performances well into the 5.7-second range, and in 2013, won the WCOPMA series championship. But for 2015, Meadors decided to tackle a new challenge, placing his Camaro up for sale to go Nostalgia Funny Car racing.

Now, Meadors finds himself strapped into a Brad Hadman-built chassis, behind a 314 cubic inch, cackling Alan Johnson Hemi, cloaked by a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro body.

Meadors earned his Nitro Funny Car license ahead of the March Meet in Bakersfield earlier this month and arrived ready to mix it up with the best in the business at arguably the biggest nostalgia event of the season. There, he and the Goodguys team out together a solid outing with runs that put them on pace to run in the 5.90s, but unfortunately, they came up short of the qualified field in their debut.

That said, the team was ecstatic with their progress and has high hopes for the season ahead.

“We still haven’t made a complete full pull, but this car wants to run hard it seems, and we haven’t began to touch on its potential. That is a great sign!

“We are very happy that we left the March Meet on a high note. We battled throughout the weekend and were able to chase away the little gremlins we faced. The entire team did an amazing job. We’re getting that fluidity that is needed in this type of racing among the group of us and we’re only going to get better.”
