Hairston Motorsport’s Breaks Records and Pushes for Fives

Clint “The Milkman” Hairston and team drove home a hard hitting win with a 6.084@ 240.85 mph this past weekend at the Pacific Street Car Associations California Nationals May 21st-23rd 2010. With the quickest and fastest pass ever in PSCA history, the Hairston Motorsport’s team exceeded even their own expectations battling it out for the win against what was probably the toughest competition yet in the Pro Street class. Hairston qualified in the 3rdposition for the event with a 6.20 behind a 6.16 and 6.09 put up by the competition, which is a clear sign that the ante is up on the West Coast. In the recent months, a select group of contenders have begun to break the 6.20 range and faster. It’s a first for the PSCA’s top class. The Hairston Motorsport’s team however has been a clear leader in what has been a fast paced battle of racers reaching to be first in the fives.

In early 2009, the team began to consistently back up passes in the 6.20 range with a 6.23 just over one year ago in Fontana. In the following months better ET’s and higher mph’s followed with Hairston setting a National speed record for a Pro Street car of its type at 230.23 mph in Bakersfield, California. Since that time, they have broken their record twice. By the season end of 2009, Hairston became the West Coast’s hopeful to win the Street Car Super Nationals (SCSN) qualifying 8th and laying down a 6.16 @ 236.51 mph in the first round. Hairston ran by the competition at the SCSN only to loose in the final round to engine troubles. The team started 2010 with a bang winning the PSCA’s season opener and locking in both the ET and mph record.

The power is provided by a 377 cubic inch twin turbo small block and is almost one of the smallest cubic inch engines to compete the Pro Street class.

The Hairston Motorsport’s entry is a 2007 Bickel GTO painted traditional Chevrolet orange. The power is provided by a 377 cubic inch twin turbo small block and is almost one of the smallest cubic inch engines to compete the Pro Street class. It’s certainly however not short on power with twin 88mm Precision Pro Mod turbo’s backed by the years of the engineering expertise of Ken Duttweiler.

I caught up with Clint “The Milkman” Hairston, the team’s driver between rounds in Fontana to get an inside perspective. Hairston said “its simply hard work and test time that has gotten us to this point. He then began to talk about chassis and that’s when I knew why this car is so fast. Hairston explained that the team had concentrated efforts working with Bickel and local chassis builder Bill Hickok fine tuning the chassis and suspension. They had also consulted with Don Ness on working the short times. The combination of the engine and chassis has to work together. Getting the power to the ground is key. The work and time spent has paid off. With the chassis now working at its best, Hairston plans next steps for more power. The team will upgrade their ten year old engine this summer with a 398 cubic inch again from Duttweiler. Hairston said the new engine will have improved cylinder heads and overall design performance. He believes this will be the ticket needed to get to the five second range that will be likely needed for the SCSN in 2010.

Hairston Motorsport’s is a family affair started by Jim and Kathy Hairston with their sons Clint and Jake in 2001. At the time, the goal was to create a Pro Street entry that would be a top contender. I had to ask how they decided who would drive. Clint Hairston who has been the team driver all along said it just made the best sense at the time. “Jake Hairston, my brother, is just more mechanically inclined and he wanted to work on the car. He is currently serving as the Crew Chief and does all the maintenance on the car. My father Jim finances the team and houses the car in his shop.” Jim Hairston set the precedent for a racing family running Super Stock in the 60’s and 70’s and has worked in the performance racing industry all his life. The team is joined by Co-Crew Chief Doug Stewart, Car Chief Tom “Mr. Clean” Esbri, and Nikki Lanser who is the teams PR and marketing person. As a point of interest Clint is dubbed the Milkman because he breeds dairy cattle for a living contracting himself as an expert in the BakersfieldCalifornia area.
