Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Certainly not Australian Holden owner Tim Perry! As it turns out, he recently threw down his best drag strip pass at the Australian Pro Street Association (APSA) Shootout in February with his utility vehicle, running an astonishing 8.73-second quarter mile at 161mph. Think that’s impressive? Well, he also did it while retaining an independent rear suspension and a truck bed on his Ute. Check out his amazing run in the YouTube video above.
The 2012 Fuch’s Lubricants APSA Shootout was held at Calder Park Raceway in Keilor Victoria, Australia on February 18th.
This massive showdown of some of the most powerful and fastest street cars around proved to be an exciting event with Nostalgia, Outlaw, Pro Street, Eliminator, Modified and True Street drag racing competitions.
Among the competitors was Perry and his Holden Commodore SS Ute competing for HP-F Racing. If you’re unfamiliar with this vehicle, it is a coupe utility vehicle made by GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden. The cool thing about them is that they have the look of a Pontiac G8 in the front, but a truck bed in the back. There were rumors at one point that Chevrolet would be bringing something similar to the American market as the next-generation El Camino, but that never happened.
Perry’s SS Ute is not stock by any stretch of the imagination. It sports a twin-turbocharged 408ci. LS1 under the hood with plenty of get-up-and-go for a utility vehicle. Oddly enough, the car retains its independent rear suspension, however. What ever the reason behind this is, it works for Perry as he just ran his best quarter-mile time ever at the APSA event.
Congratulations goes out to Perry for owing one killer Holden and getting his best track time to date. We look forward to seeing more of his car at future drag racing events.
