Tim and Austin Sloan from Columbia Tennessee are building a killer looking “Outlaw style” 2006 Saturn Ion Redline and have posted some photos of the build on Yellowbullet.com. While we’ve not seen many Saturn drag cars on the strip, the short wheelbase and aerodynamic profile has some potential. The Ion Redline sits on the same GM Delta platform as the Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G5 coupe, cars that are very popular in NHRA Super Stock and Competition Eliminator.

The car was built like a NHRA Super Stock car and retains the factory firewall, frame rails and floorpan. The Saturn retains the factory sheet metal and we dig the cowl hood that was used to clear the small block engine. The father and son team built the roll cage, front k-member and rear suspension in their home garage. Wheel tubs were fabricated to make room for a Ford nine-inch rear and the 14×32 rear slicks. Most of the factory Saturn Ion interior was retained on the built. For functionality at the track, lightweight Kirkey seats, Auto Meter gauges and B&M Pro Bandit shifter was added for competition.

Four-wheel lightweight race brakes are from Strange Engineering and the Silver Saturn rides on Weld Racing Forged Drag wheels wrapped with Hoosier drag tires.

The car will be powered by a Huntsville Engines built LS based 427 cubic inch small block and shifts will come from a race prepped two-speed Chevy powerglide. No word from the Sloan’s on what class they intend to compete in but the car looks ready to hit the track this Spring.
