It seems KBX Performance is knee-deep in X275 cars these days. Then again, the shop is a combination of John Kolivas, Bennett Racing, and Pressurized Solutions, so you’d expect them to know a little something about small-tire drag racing. One KBX customer getting ready for the 2015 season is Jared Johnston and his X275 Fox coupe.
Jared’s car is pretty special in KBX folklore since it’s the first complete build from the upstart business venture. However, it’s also pretty special because it is the same car Brian Booze used to win the 2002 NMRA Hot Street championship. That means the car is pretty much Mustang royalty, and the car’s heritage is not lost on Jared, as he’s working to continue the car’s winning ways.
Johnston is going over the car for the 2015 racing season, which includes a return to NMRA competition in Street Outlaw. Jared ran into a few electrical issues at the end of last year so he has been working on leaving those gremlins in the past, and really try and figure out the combination, which is a KBX-built 400ci small block Ford with a Precision ProMod 85mm single turbo. Behind the powerhouse is an M&M Transmission’s TurboGlide with a Pro Torque converter.
The car definitely knows its way to the winner circle since, as Johnston won the Northstar race in Denton, Texas in October of 2014, but the gremlins derailed the car the last couple races of the year. Johnston’s brother, Jon, is the crew chief on the car, combining his talents with John Kolivas’ tuning ability and experience. Hopefully, with the electrical troubles behind them, Johnston will be able to return the car to its winning ways.
Johnston’s plan is to hit the US Street Nationals at Bradenton Motorsports Park next weekend, Lights Out 6 at SGMP, and NMRA Bradenton. He has a slew more races on the slate, as well. “We know we can keep up, we just have to make sure we fixed our problems from last year,” Johnston says. “We’re really looking forward to going back to an NMRA race, as well,” he says. Johnston tells us the last NMRA race the car attended was the Joliet (Route 66 Raceway) event in 2004, but that’s about to change.
