October 24th, 2009 is a date that Jason Hamstra will probably not forget any time soon. Hamstra, who is an up and coming star in the ADRL Pro Extreme category, went for a horrific ride during competition. As he lined up against Joshua Hernandez he probably thought it would be just another pass, but it was just 3.78 seconds later that things went very wrong. Jason’s 1968 Camaro made a sudden move to the left and went directly in the path of Hernandez’s 57′ Chevy. Hernandez narrowly avoided contact with Hamstra’s car but Jason careened nearly head on into the right wall and slid to a stop in the shutdown area. Fortunately after every precautionary measure was taken Hamstra would be evaluated at a local hospital and released the next day.
As in true racer fashion, Hamstra is not going to be one held back by a little mishap. The team has been working ever since the accident and now he is awaiting the arrival of his new 1969 Camaro bodied Pro Extreme entry. The construction has been taking place at Garrett Race Cars in Marble Hill, MO. Donned with a classic look from a Cynergy Composites body the final paint scheme is still undecided at this point, but judging from the tin work on the firewall, there will be plenty of flames gracing the body lines upon completion.
Garrett constructed the car to nearly identical configuration that was used on Jason Scrugg’s championship winning Stratus. The Garrett built machine will be capable of handling just about as much power they can throw at it. Hamstra’s father Kevin is expected to be taking delivery of the car by weeks end so the final preparations can start taking place. Once the paint is applied the car will be assembled and readied for its maiden voyage which is planned to be the season opener at Houston Raceway Park. The American Drag Racing League will kick off its season on March 19th and 20th in Baytown Texas. The action promises to be exciting as the racers of the ADRL will keep you on the edge of your seats all weekend long.
