For the last two seasons, Jason Lee and his PTP Racing Mustang has been the proverbial creme of the crop in the NMRA’s ultra popular Drag Radial eliminator, capturing back-to-back championships in near dominant fashion. Even when competing under different guidelines outside of the NMRA, Lee continued to show his prowess on a set of radials, and so when the NMRA and NMCA announced during the off season that the Drag Radial category would undergo transformation to an X275 style category, only a fool would’ve doubted that Lee wouldn’t miss a beat. And he certainly hasn’t.
Jason and team welcomed Jeff Stange and the folks at Strange Engineering aboard as backers of the now familiar bright red Fox body for the 2011 season, and with just one racing per series in the books thus far, Jason is already a perfect 2-for-2.
The NMRA season opened two weeks ago down at the Bradenton Motorsports Park down in Bradenton, Florida, where Jason got off to a strong start with a #3 qualifying effort of 7.67 seconds and marched his way through eliminations, besting Enzo Pecchini in the semifinals and taking down top qualifier Sean Lyon in the money round to etch his name as the first ever winner of the new-look Drag Radial category. Over the weekend, the PTP Racing crew returned to Bradenton for the NMCA opener, riding high from their NMRA victory just two weeks earlier. And the end result was much the same.
Jason placed the Strange Engineering-backed Mustang atop the 275 Drag Radial field with a great 7.54 at 182 miles per hour and as the raceday came to a close, found himself matched up in a blower versus nitrous affair with Josh Fernandez for all the marbles. Lee used a great 7.71 at 179 to grab the hardware, while Fernandez trailed through the lights with an 8.05 effort. And with that, also put a target squarely on his back in both series as the points leader and without question the man everyone wants to take down.
