John Kolivas Sets His Sights On Outlaw 275 At No Mercy III

Really, would you expect anything else? The guy wins and sets records everywhere he goes.

He’s been a three-time champion in the NMRA and has turned on the win light in numerous other big-time, big-money races across the country. And now he’s got his sights set on teammate Joel Greathouse’s 4.56-second record Outlaw 275 run from February’s Lights Out III at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Kolivas headed out to Holly Springs Raceway last weekend in an attempt to get the car ready for the upcoming No Mercy III race at South Georgia Motorsports Park in less than two weeks.

Kolivas runs a 427 cubic inch small block Ford engine machined and assembled by the wizards at Bennett Racing in Alabama, pumped up by a pair of Precision Turbo and Engine 88mm turbochargers, and races the car at 3,250 pounds in this class. The turbos must be necked down to 80mm by way of a pair of reducers in order to fit the rules structure, but that hasn’t deterred Kolivas from making big steam on the racetrack.

While at Holly Springs, Kolivas and his crew were able to click off a 4.59 at 170.5 mph – near enough to Greathouse’s elapsed time record for Kolivas to feel comfortable heading into the upcoming event. In addition, the 170.5 MPH he put up on the scoreboard that day crushes the previous eighth-mile class speed record of 162 and change set by, you guessed it, Greathouse. Kolivas explained, “We’ve been a couple of high 160’s in testing lately but this is the first time we’ve hit 170.  It shatters the speed record for the 275’s by a mile, and we hope to get the ET record next time out.”

So…the question is, will he be able to live up to his own lofty standards at the end of September? Pay attention to what happens at No Mercy III.
