The NHRA’s West Central Division captured just its second JEGS Allstars title in over three decades of competition at this year’s special race-within-a-race at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals, following up its first-ever team championship in 2014 with an encore performance. And behind the scenes (and under the wheel wells), the team at JRi Shocks played a small but pivotal role in their victory.
The North Carolina-based manufacturer had its shocks underneath three different cars, piloted by two drivers, who powered to victory in their respective categories in the Allstars event, which helped push Division 5 to the top of the standings. This charge was led by heavy-hitter Trevor Larsen, who became the first driver in the 32-year history of the Allstars to double-up in two categories, capturing both the Super Comp and Super Gas index titles in his JRi-equipped machines.
Larson got the better of Austin Williams in the deciding Super Comp matchup, gaining a slight .003-second edge at the tree and pushing Williams under the 8.90 index. He did the same in the Super Gas finale, using a stellar .010 reaction time to force opponent Mike Wiblishouser under the 9.90 standard.
JRi Shocks helped us move to the next level in consistency and performance. We were looking to move from a Top 25 in the nation car to a Top 10 and asked ourselves what we had to do; a more repeatable 60-foot was one of our goals. JRi Shocks was instrumental in accomplishing that,” said Larson.
Larson’s Division 5 teammate J.J. Heber added more points to the team tally in Top Sportsman, as the Colorado native drove his 2006 Mustang to victory over Michael Cerro, who had troubles and left the tree was activated, handing the win and the deciding points in the championship to Heber. Showing the consistency that’s partly owed to the JRi Double Adjustable Shocks and Ultra Struts on his car, Heber motored on down the 1/4-mile to a dead-on 6.650 on his 6.65 dial-in.
“Our car was not responding to changes made to the struts or shocks. We had JRi rebuild the struts, qualified for the AllStars Event and then sent the rears in to be rebuilt. This made the car consistent where it was lacking,” said Heber.
