Kooks Custom Headers Pro Mod Title Chase Headed Down To The Wire

With five of six championship races completed, the NMCA‘s Kooks Custom Headers Pro Mod class is heading into the final event with a points chase that’s tight and racers that are giving it their all to take home that coveted championship jacket. Entering this past weekend’s 8th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Nationals event at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, Jimmy Keen held a slim 85 point lead over second-place Josh Green, with Steve Summers only 80 points back in third.

By the end of the qualifying sessions, Summers’ 526-cube twin-turbocharged Camaro was on top of the field with an outstanding 5.88 blast at well over 255 MPH, followed by Green’s 5.94 at 236 from his nitrous machine. Keen was back in sixth with a 6.035, setting up a solid ladder for Sunday’s elimination rounds.

There, Keen saw his title hopes take a serious beating, as when the sun came up on Sunday morning he was nowhere to be found. This pushed the door wide open for Green and Summers to pick up substantial ground in the points chase — and that’s exactly what they did.

summersIn his first round matchup with Tyler Levan, Green had an easy time of it as Levan didn’t make the call. Green’s Part-Time Performance-tuned Musi 903 crossed the stripe with a 6.05 at only 188 MPH in the heat of the day. Summers, by virtue of his top qualifier spot, took the competition bye and putted down the track. The second round of competition found both Green and Summers with single passes again, moving easily into the semifinal round.

There, Green’s string of luck continued as Brian Hicks’ turbocharged ’70 Duster didn’t make the call, allowing him to move straight to the final round without facing a single opponent. On the other side of the ladder, Summers had to put the wood to it and turned in the quickest elapsed time of eliminations with a 5.940 at 249-plus to take out nitrous proponent Jim Widener’s 6.081 in a tough matchup.

The final round in Pro Mod saw Summers turn on the red with a heartbreaking -.001 reaction time, while Green turned in his quickest lap of the day on an outstanding 5.975 blast to take home the win, along with the points lead, heading into the series’ final event in Indianapolis in October.

An outstanding weekend of Pro Mod action and a points chase that’s a tooth-and-nail fight to the finish — just what you want to see from the NMCA’s quickest class.
