Kye Kelley’s Camaro Gets New Paint And Billet Specialties Wheels

Kye Kelley 1

The legend of Kye Kelley was born the instant he appeared on Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws and defeated all-comers on Cash Days. A quiet, humble dude with a cajun accent, he put up a fight against OKC’s Daddy Dave and the Sonoma, and lost by a bumper. For someone to seemingly come out of nowhere to give the Sonoma such a tough race, everyone knew he was a force to be reckoned with.

Kelley bought the car as a 75-percent roller. “We brought it home, set it up for the street.” Owned the car roughly 3 years, and the engine eight years. “Engine was in a Chevy Luv truck. You should've seen the wheelies.” Raced “I like to race. Some people like the street, some people like that truck, I just like to race.

He’s owned the car roughly three years, and the engine eight years. “I had the engine was in a Chevy Luv. You should’ve seen the wheelies,” he says. “I like to race. Some people like the street, some people like the track, I just like to race.”

When Kelley and his Camaro made their TV debut, the car was definitely fast, but at that time it was function over form. Recently though, he took care of that aspect of the car. DBlanton Enterprises’ Dewey Blanton used PPG black to make the Camaro look like new, but the car also received new wheels, as well. The new paint and shiny wheels replaced the Camaro’s murdered out look with Billet Specialties Comp series 15×3.5 wheels up front and 15×15 examples out back. The wheels are wrapped in Mickey Thompson Front Runners and 33×16.5×15 ET Drag slicks in the rear.

What you all want to know, which is what’s under that big scoop, is a TPS Motorsports-built 638-inch big block Chevy. “Basically a wore out 632,” Kelley says. The 638 features a Brodix block, Crower crank and rods, Wiseco pistons, CFE aluminum heads, and a Gary Williams sheet metal intake and carburetors. That alone is not going to compete with the likes of Daddy Dave, Big Chief, Doc, and the Murder Nova. Therefore, Kelley sprays the house down via an Induction Solutions/Steve Johnson nitrous system, with Darryle Bird helping with the nitrous tune-up.

To make some of the new bright work possible, Kelley won the Street Outlaws Cash Days, beating Doc, Daddy Dave, and Big Chief in the process.

Behind the big Chevy is a PTC Powerglide and converter, a 9-inch rear with Mark Williams 40-spline gun-drilled axles, and a Strange center section. BeCool handles the car’s cooling system. A Powermaster starter and alternator with a XS Power battery make up the car’s 16-volt electrical system.

Up next for Kelley’s is Big Chief’s nationwide call out race, which we’ll see the results of on an episode of Street Outlaws — maybe sometime in August. One thing’s for sure, Kye Kelley will be one of the favorites.
