If you’re a true hardcore drag racing fan, we know you were either at Lights Out 6 last weekend, or you were watching the live feed from the living room, the garage, or maybe at the shop working on your own car. And what you witnessed were outstanding performance by a ton of racers. One company who had a slew of customers performing at the top of their game was ProTorque, the performance torque converter company. ProTorque’s customers qualified No. 1 in three of the heads-up classes. Barry Mitchell qualified at the top of Outlaw Drag Radial, Jared Johnston in X275, and the legend, Joel Greathouse, in Ultimate Street.
Although Mitchell didn’t win Outlaw Drag Radial, he qualified No. 1 with a 4.35 at 174 mph. For Greathouse and Johnston, both went wire-to-wire in their respective classes. In Ultimate Street, the best times up until the event were in the 5.0s, but Greathouse shattered the record with a 4.84 at 147 mph at the debut event for his new car. Greathouse relies on John “The Class Killer” Kolivas for car set-up, and the car runs one of ProTorque’s Gen X converters.
For Johnston, he had a little payback on his mind after not being able to seal the deal at the U.S. Street Nationals at Bradenton. He was able to exact a little revenge at Lights Out 6 by not only qualifying in the top spot, but getting a win over Patrick Clenney in the final of X275. Kolivas also helps with Johnston’s program, and selected one of ProTorque’s EV-1 converters for the car.
Chris Daniels in Radial vs The World was on the verge of the magical three-second zone at Lights Out 6, and ran a personal best with a 4.04 at 201 mph. Daniels ended up finishing runner-up at the event in his Proline-powered, twin-turbo Trans Am.
Other ProTorque customers who had productive weekends at Lights Out 6 included Don Lamana, Artis Houston, and Alex and Martin Shows. These guys had personal bests at the race. Something else ProTorque can hang its hat on; the DeWayne Mills Camaro took flight during the event, proving ProTorque “knows what it takes to make a car fly.”
