For a lot of folks the idea of their street car breaking into the 8’s and driving back home after wards is a bit far-fetched, but luckily for this Camaro owner it is reality. You may remember back in January we were impressed by the car’s 9 Second Passes but with some more seat time, small adjustments, and fine tuning – this already awesome street car has broken into the 8 second zone during a Sunday track rental at PBIR.
Check out more of what this gnarly ’98 Z28 pulled off on the Yellowbullet Forum, and see the video of the 8.98 pass below (second run in the video, but I don’t think you’ll mind the Firebird at the beginning).
Over the course of the morning they were able to get 4 solid runs out of it, starting off with a couple of 9.0xx passes. Knowing he was going to need a little more ‘oomph’ to get that 8 second slip, he bumped the boost up to 19 psi from around 18.5, and that was all it took – the next run out the owner got off the personal best 8.985 at 153 mph. After being so thrilled about the run he was ready to call it a day, but wanted to challenge himself by tossing the subwoofer and amplifier back in the car to give it a shot with some extra weight – the next run didn’t disappoint either, and repeated the 8.98 as if it were a mirror run. This car’s consistency can be described as none other than deadly.
Ok, ok, so now you’re probably thinking something like, “How in the heck does a car with a nearly stock appearance pull this off?” While it surely isn’t the easiest thing to do in the world, the huge aftermarket support for the LSx engines makes finding all the parts you need rather simple, so long as you’ve got the dough. This particular Z28’s basic spec sheet is as follows:
-LQ9 370 ci Iron block (.030 over)
-Stock Crank
-Forged 6.125″ rods
–Wiseco K392X3 Forged 25cc dish
–Livernois Stage 2 Cam (232/232 .595/595 114)
–AFR 225 CNC ported w/ some additional bowl work by Mamo
–FAST 90mm Intake With accompanying 90mm TB
-Forward facing 6.0 Truck Manifold
-And most importantly, an 88mm Precision turbocharger.
Special congrats goes out to PBIR for the amazing track prep as always, it’s not every day that you can get 5 clean passes and 5 personal bests in one day!
