It’s only been about three seasons in the making following the re-launch of the iconic Chevrolet Camaro, but we think it’s finally safe to say that GM’s flagship fifth-generation muscle has arrived on the drag racing scene as the 2012 season dawns. Consider not only the imminent production of the COPO Camaro concept, but the current construction and testing of a number of Pro Modified, Pro Stock, Outlaw 10.5 and other Camaro-based machines, and the numbers certainly show that the new-age Camaro is no longer a niche model in the straight line sport.
Among those planning to debut the sleek new Camaro’s this season includes LSX Drag Radial competitor and 2011 LSX Shootout series champion Mike Meeks, who’s trading up his eye-catching F-body Trans Am for a brand new 2012 Camaro for battle in the growing number of LS-specific events.
Meeks is building his new machine from a body-in-white from Chevrolet (you eyes aren’t deceiving you, it’s indeed yellow and not white) around a chassis that fabricator and ADRL Pro Extreme standout Joey Martin turned around in just a scant six days time. As you can see in the images, enough material is removed the body to convert it into a race car to build a smaller, second car from. Per Meeks, the 440 cubic inch, LSX-based nitrous powerplant from the Trans Am will be transplanted into the Camaro, delivering the power to run down into the sevens in the quarter mile.
Meeks expects to be on track in the next three to four months with the new machine. The GM Performance Parts LSX Challenge Series, part of the NMCA Flowmaster Muscle Car Nationals, kicks off March 15-18 in Bradenton, Fla.
