It’s January, and you know what that means – it’s almost time to go racing. For many that also means there’s ample snow on the ground and no sign of racing in the near-term, but most teams are busily ramping up their racing program for the upcoming season. Some people update old faithful, some have spent the winter building a new car, while others have had a car stashed away for a minute just waiting for a reason to bring it back out.
The latter is exactly what Mark Micke and Jason Carter have planned with this ’67 Camaro, nicknamed the Midnight Rider. With all the fuss over radial versus slick cars buzzing about, Mark and Jason have decided to dust off the Midnight Rider in the quest to hurt some feelings later this summer. The car is actually a Larry Larson Race Cars-built Outlaw 10.5 car put together back in 2002. The car was campaigned for a few years, and even won a Clash of the Titans race before Mark sold it, only to buy it back.
For 2015, Mark and Jason are going to put their heads together on the car, along with fellow M&M runner Mark Woodruff, as well. The plan is to use the car as a test bed for M&M Transmissions’ (Jefferson City, Missouri) components and ideas. Mark and Jason have tried to use their familiar twin-turbo Malibu as a test bed, but that hasn’t worked out in their favor thus far, so the Camaro will fill that role. The team is going to focus on what’s working with the Malibu and test new ideas and components on the Camaro. Along with that, the car is being built to run under the Cecil County Dragway rules with either Mickey Thompson 315’s or 33 x 10.5W’s.
From a build standpoint, the car is ready to rock. The car features a 25.3 certification chassis with an updated Larry Larson Race Cars 4-link setup. Midnight Rider’s primary engine is a Nelson Competition-built big block Chevy with twin Garrett turbochargers, tuned with Big Stuff 3. The transmission is of course going to be an M&M-built Turbo 400 with a lock-up converter.
The Camaro should be ready by late-summer, with a goal to be ready to go by the Yellowbullet Nationals. So you have time to figure out a way to catch the Midnight Rider.
