It has been no secret that Mike Moran has sold his famous 5-second Monte Carlo in favor of building something new. Many people had their assumptions, and we believed that Billy Glidden and Mike Moran were going to build Mustangs, and now we can confirm that latter half of this is true. In a recent phone interview with Mike he revealed that he already has two Ford Pro Stock bodies, though going a completely different direction with them. Moran commissioned famed race car composites maker Joe Van Overbeek to produce a highly altered version of the Ford Pro Stock body that will be redesigned for Pro Mod competition, and Moran plans to resell these bodies, hopefully through Ford Motorsports as well.
The two Pro Stock bodies Mike received were shipped directly to Joe Van O’s shop in Canada for the redesigning. The bodies will be built like an F1 car with carbon/honey comb/carbon that will be vacuum molded. Moran wanted to redesign the Pro Stock body for an organization that was without rules – the ADRL. “The rear wheel wells are way too big for me. You can take a slick off the back of those Pro Stock cars without even letting air out of the tire,” Moran stated. With that, they actually took molding mock ups of a stock Mustang rear quarter panel so that it can be adapted. The front end will be 6 inches more narrow with front wheel openings that will also be reduced in size. Additionally, the front end will get Mike’s signature coil-type hood with more front end clearance for forced induction. The rear bumper will be designed with a splitter in the rear bumper to prevent from air lifting the car via the wing. Wheel base will be close at 113″.
From there the bodies will be up for sale as Pro Mod pieces Mike’s bodies will be shipped to chassis builder Larry Larson, being built along side Steve Matusek’s Pro Mod Mustang. Mike hopes to have the bodies by April and the car together around July. At this point, Mike is going to steer away from the purple paint job and currently has his mind set on a black/blue theme.
The engine will be all billet pieces by Charlie Weston. The block design will incorporate queues from all engine brands plus Mike’s own spin on it. It will be a 572ci with center thrust bearings, 2″ raised cam, and even 9 cam bearings. The heads will be hemi type billets along with the intake manifold. It will also receive twin turbos and will be backed by a Liberty 5-speed transmission.
