Those who follow modern Mustang performance are definitely aware of Modular Motorsports Racing. The company offers a wide variety of engine upgrades for modular and Coyote platforms, but is also notable for its drag strip accomplishments. In recent memory MMR’s Pro Mod 2016 Mustang racer ran an insane 3.87 pass, making it the quickest Coyote around.

Now the MMR team is putting together an all-new S550 racer to showcase its robust, billet GenX Coyote engines. The new also serves as a replacement for the company’s outgoing 10.5 racer.

“The new car was built to fill a position that MMR stepped out of in 2015 after winning the NMCA West 10.5 Championship. The car was sold immediately after the last race to NMCA West Racers Dana and Don Cook of Arizona,” Mark Luton, President of MMR, explained. “A new car was started in 2016 and now nearing completion. The chassis shares some similarities between its predecessor but with many current updates.”

In addition to the new car, MMR added a new wrinkle to the program, which garnered some attention. There will be a second driver in this car, but one who is quite familiar with racing MMR-powered machines.

“MMR’s new S550 Mustang nears completion, it will feature a twin-turbo 3,000-horsepower MMR GenX and will run in many different classes across the country,” the company announced on social media. “Driving duties are expected to be split between Mark Luton and NMRA sensation Haley James of the Hellion B Team.”

I feel extremely honored, and I know I will be extra cautious with the decisions made in the car. — Haley James, Hellion B-Team

That’s right, NMRA Coyote Modified and Renegade racers Haley James — part of the storied Hellion Power Systems B-Team spearheaded by her father Dwayne James — is set to pilot this powerful racer at select events.

“Well, right now, I am entrusted with the capability of driving a car that my dad and racing family built for me, which feels a lot different than to be entrusted with the responsibility of driving a car built by somebody that has faith in you completely based upon friendship, sponsorship, and merit,” Haley told us. “I feel extremely honored, and I know I will be extra cautious with the decisions made in the car. The margin of error in a car like this is monumentally smaller, therefore I have to be monumentally better.”

One of the company’s billet GenX engines, boosted by two Garrett turbos, will power this new Mustang. It will be backed by a Pro Torque-prepped automatic transmission.

For Mark and the MMR crew it was a natural fit to bring the B-Team driver onto its team.

“Continued partnership with Hellion and the Hellion B team was just a natural progression. They are a professional team and are capable of getting the correct exposure with the car and the events that they are accustomed to traveling to,” he said. “Haley is a great up-and-coming driver who adds a nice flair to the sport and our product line. MMR has had the pleasure of dealing with other great female, drivers such as Dana Cook, who now drives the old MMR 10.5 racecar.”

Haley certainly seems to be up for the new challenge of driving for a second racing team.

“There’s a lot of good pressure to be better and I like a challenge,” she added.

Look for the car to debut at this year’s Street Car Supernationals, which runs from August 3-5 in Madison, Illinois.
