As was touted by NHRA officials and executives at FOX Sports, the organization today revealed the eliminations portion of its 2016 television scheduling, featuring 17 live Sunday broadcasts — four of which will air on the FOX network.
In addition to the live Sunday finals shows (Monday at the NHRA U.S. Nationals), FOX Sports (FS1 and FS2) will also air eight primetime Friday night qualifying shows during the season. The complete qualifying programming schedule is still being assembled, and NHRA officials will be releasing that at a later date.
In all, the NHRA will encompass 120 hours of live and tape-delayed original programming on FOX Sports, FS1, and FS2, and 450 hours of total programming throughout the year, including coverage of the Lucas Oil Series, J&A Service Pro Mod Series, and repeats of the Sunday NHRA Mello Yello eliminations broadcasts.
FOX Sports and the FOX network will air the Winternationals in Pomona, followed by Phoenix, Gainesville, Las Vegas, Houston, Chicago, Brainerd and Indianapolis, along with all six stops in the Countdown to the Championship, live. The eight Friday night qualifying shows will air from the opener and season finale in Pomona, along with Gainesville, both races in Las Vegas, Houston, Atlanta, and Dallas, sandwiched in between.
“We expect the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season to be a major turning point in the history of this sport through the power of live television coverage,” said NHRA president Peter Clifford. “With our new television partner FOX Sports, we will present the majority of our races with live television coverage, and make history on July 24 in Denver when the series has its first Sunday finals show air live on a national broadcast network.”
“This is a historic television package for NHRA drag racing and its fans, and we are thrilled to be able to work together with their team to deliver a powerful package to the largest audience possible,” said Patrick Crakes, senior vice president programming, research and content strategy. “The addition of NHRA racing reaffirms the FOX Sports commitment to motorsports, adding to a stable that now includes all three NASCAR national series, Monster Energy Supercross, FIM MotoGP World Championship, FIA Formula E Championship, the ARCA Racing Series, FIA World Endurance Championship, the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Monster Jam and others.”
