Australian Paul Mouhayet became the fastest man alive in a doorslammer last fall when he rocketed to a 273.39 mph blast in Las Vegas, adding to his distinction as the world’s fastest pilot of a 10.5W-tire car, having gone 252 mph and change in his native land in the Moits Racing twin-turbo Mustang. Recently, however, the popular driver who simply knows no fear further solidified his position as the quickest turbocharged racer in all of Australia, when he and the Moits crew bolted on a set of big tires and cranked off a new national record of 5.892 at 254.42 mph in the very same car.
For Moits and Mouhayet, it’s all about making a statement.
You see, despite the inclusion of turbo cars in Pro Modified here in the states for the better part of a decade now, the Australians to this day still don’t allow turbocharged engines in their premier full-bodied eliminator, Top Doorslammer. That leaves a racer like Mouhayet, who has two race cars more than capable of being competitive in the class, lobbying his case but sitting on the outside looking in nonetheless. So cranking off those kinds of numbers helps send a message, nonetheless.
And so Mouhayet, in grudge racer fashion, is left with no choice but to start calling out Top Doorslammer racers for me side-by-side match races. Perhaps with a little cash thrown in.
Such is the case with an upcoming match between the Moits Racing Mustang and former Aussie Outlaw 10.5 racer Frank Mamone, who recently stepped up to the big times with a new supercharged Plymouth Barracuda Top Doorslammer entry. The two will reportedly race for$5,000 at the Street Machine SuperNats in Sydney in September — a special event that will match blower and turbo cars up with a whopping $20,000 going to the winner.
