Here’s some trivia for you: when was the last time a nitrous car won in the Street Outlaw (or Super Street Outlaw as it was formerly known) class in the NMCA or NMRA? Yeah, we don’t know either, although someone is sure to chime in with the correct answer.
After an incredible weekend of racing in the exciting heads-up category combining True 10.5-inch slicks and 275 drag radials, that question will be a lot easier to answer, after the racer they call “Corndog”, Phil Smith, and his always-entertaining crew chief, Billy Adams, outlasted a sea of blower and turbo cars to collect perhaps their biggest win to date at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing at the Route 66 Raceway.
Smith and Adams, determined to be players in the Street Outlaw category, dropped some weight out of their Billet Specialties-backed Trans Am, had Nelson Competition hop up their 588-inch powerplant, and headed to their primary sponsors’ home track and the most prestigious event of the season to make some noise. And that’s exactly what they did.
Smith qualified No. 6 in the 13-car field of racers with a stellar 7.18 at 192 MPH. Adams then cranked things up a bit for the opening round of eliminations, as Smith made his career-best run of 7.111 at 194.07 to advance to Sunday’s second round of eliminations. Smith then improved from there in the performance department, clicking off a 7.091 at 194.77 to take down a red-lighting Phil Hines and then ran another 7.11 in the semifinals when heavy favorite John Urist boiled the hides at the starting line.
By this point, Smith’s march through eliminations with what was considered a disadvantageous power adder combination was all the talk as he entered the finals, but as quick as his match with Andy Manson began, it was over, as Manson took a shot at the tree and came up red, handing the 7.109-second, 193.99 MPH win to the Corndog in what was without question one of the strongest Street Outlaw/Super Street Outlaw fields in years.
