PRI 2017: Take Control With Chassis Engineering Steering Wheels

[1]

The steering wheel inside your racecar may seem like a simple object, but it’s an area with untapped potential for improvement that you might not be aware of. Chassis Engineering [2] has found a way to reinvent the wheel in a way that allows racers to save weight, and have additional locations for the various buttons they use in their car.

The idea seed to come up with a lightweight steering wheel was planted in the brain trust at Chassis engineering when they were working on developing their new Pro Mod chassis. They were trying to find ways to cut as much weight from the car as possible, and they found the steering wheel was a location that could easily accomplish this without sacrificing the structure of the car elsewhere.

According to Curt Perry, the wheel is not only a featherweight but has some functionality built in as well. “We found a manufacturer for the ring of the wheel and added the holes to lighten it more. The center was also designed to be as light as possible, and we profiled it all to save weight where we could so it only weighs 3/4 of a pound. A big advantage to the wheel is the five button holes we added and their location on the wheel. The holes are sized to fit any standard button on the market, and we can customize the location of the buttons if a racer needs it.”

The wheels come with the five-bolt pattern for SFI hubs and can be purchased with an adapter for three-bolt hubs as well. Chassis Engineering offers the wheels in a natural form with no finish, powder coated black or a color of your choice, and with a carbon fiber look. These wheels are designed to work on everything from your standard bracket car, all the way up to a full-blown Pro Mod.
