Project 666 receives a full race-only drivetrain

In our last update on our Project 666 Fox Body Mustang, we took to the track at the annual LA Invasion at the Fontana Dragway quarter mile for some shakedown runs to see just what the old girl was capable of and what adjustments we needed to make prior to our next outing to gain the best possible performance.

To recap, we made five runs over the course of the day. On the first pass, we forgot to remove the factory bump stops on the chassis, and the rear end slammed into the stops on the shifts, netting a less than stellar 13.57. Tire spin on the second lap netted just a 12.81 at a slowing 81 MPH. We finally got the car into the 11’s on the third pass with an 11.91, but the following two attempts both succumbed to tire spin in the 97 degree heat and much hotter track temperature. Much was learned from the test, and we quickly realized that Project 666 is a race car, pure and simple. And as such, it was time to move to a race-only drivetrain to match.

In this installment, we’ll get you up to speed on all of the new parts we’ve installed on 666 as we prepare for our next – and hopefully much more successful – outing at the track.

As you can see here, we’ve got the whole gamut of high performance drivetrain components from TCI ready to go into our Mustang. The key ingredient is the new 26-spline TCI C4 transmission that will cope very well with all of the power that we’re making, which will soon be further increased when our new engine is completed and dropped in the car. Also, we received TCI’s:

513000 – C4 SFI certified bell housing

823800 -Transmision Cooler Kit

529618 – Flywheel

861100 – Roll stop solenoid

475406 – 8″ converter Pro-X torque converter

611641 – Outlaw shifter with button

618013 – 3 speed rev gate plate Thunder Stick

977000 – C4 transmission shield, required by NHRA rules

950600 – 3 gallons of RTF

Out in the PowerTV garage, Sean is in the midst of getting the transmission mounts installed in the car so that the C4 and the cooler can be mounted, along with the all of the lines for the cooler. The old transmission crossmember matched the previous transmission, and will need to move forward about 1.5” to accommodate the C4. Once bolted up, we’ll measure for a new driveshaft. Once everything underneath the car is buttoned up, we’ll then of course installed the new Outlaw shifter. In our next update, we’ll provide some additional updates on the new drivetrain install once everything is complete as we prepare to send 666 down the track again.
