Yes, the title is correct. A Chevrolet HHR has been converted into a bracket racing machine with a lot of tube chassis and custom work done by renowned builder Joey Martin of Joey Martin Race Cars in Milton, Florida.
Martin is well known from his time behind the wheel of the legendary ‘LowMad’ Pro Modified entry that is now being campaigned by Thomas Huddleston. Martin built that very car in his shop, which put national attention on his chassis shop, where one of the more unique builds we’ve seen has been coming together over the past few months: Ronnie Jernigan’s Chevrolet HHR.
A four-door SUV that’s sitting on a complete 25.1 tube chassis isn’t something you see at every race track across the globe, making Jernigan’s new build truly one-of-a-kind. Martin and his skilled team filled the interior with sheets of carbon fiber to enhance the appearance of the custom hot rod, saving weight in the process.
Under the hood sits a naturally aspirated 406 cubic inch small-block Chevrolet engine backed by a race-ready Powerglide transmission to top off the drive train. MSD Ignition components are mounted on the dash, including a complete Grid system to ensure the setup is tuned to perfection and keep enough spark running through the HHR.
The custom SUV also features a set of Billet Specialties wheels packing a set of beadlocks to enhance the looks and performance. The single wheelie bar extending from the rear bumper will assist in keeping the front end of the car on the ground and driving straight and true without major wheelstand issues, keeping Jernigan on the road to consistency — which is key in bracket and index racing. With the functionality of a stock appearing HHR, Ronnie Jernigan will definitely have one of the most talked-about cars at the track on any given weekend.
