The quickest doorslammer pilot in the world, Kuwait native Turky Al Zafiri, will soon get the chance to get add radial tire records to his resume when he suits up and climbs into a sleek new small-tire machine constructed by the master craftsman at RaceCraft Inc. in Minnesota for the formidable Q80 Racing Team.
The unique new machine, a “four-eye” Ford Mustang that’s a rarity in small-tire racing, will feature power from a monstrous Pro Line Racing 670 cubic inch big block paired with a set of 98mm Precision turbochargers that will be prepared and tuned by Eric Dillard, Steve Petty, and the gang at Pro Line. Intercooled on gas, the custom billet beast makes some 4,000 horsepower. A Rossler Turbo 400 transmission built upon a Reid Racing case will transfer the power through a ProTorque converter to a Strange full floater Ultra case out back. The car is currently wearing a set of 29×10.5 slicks, but there’s little reason to doubt it won’t have a set of radials on it at some point in the future.
The car features Racecraft’s 25.3 double framerail chassis, but retains a stock suspension setup and even the stock floors and tunnel, and comes in at a very impressive 2,300 lbs. minus paint, plumbing, and wiring, making it one of the lighter new-gen radial cars we’ve seen. A healthy dose of carbon fiber in the car’s interior, along with a carbon rear wing and a lightweight nose and hood from Dan Schoneck Composities help to keep the weight to a minimum.
Racecraft has utilized a couple of newly-developed parts on this particular build, including a new K-member that, according to Kory Fastnacht, is designed to be very wide and broad to make plumbing the cars much easier as far as running exhaust and charge pipes and even rear-exit exhaust. The other, a two-piece mid plate, allows the engine to be set further back in the car with the factory firewall, and will be a more universal offering for different vehicle applications. The car has also been equipped with Optic Armors’ polycarbonate windows.
As Fastnacht tells us, the Fox was initially to be a “house” car, but Q80 Racing assumed the project when they were unable to locate an ’04 model body as they’d hoped. At that time, the chassis was complete, and was only in need of a drivetrain and all of the components. The progress on the car made the four-eye attractive to the team led by Shaikh Duaij Fahad Al-Sabah, as it would allow them time to complete the build by the first of the year.
With the Arabian Drag Racing League in Qatar fast approaching, the car is leaving Racecraft this week and going to Pro Line, where it will be painted, wired, and plumbed. It will then be transported over to the Middle East to prepare for the season that begins in early January. Q80 Racing tentatively plans to bring the car back to the states for competition at major radial events, although that hasn’t been confirmed at this time.
Al Zafiri has proven himself quite the driver, as he came to the states as a relative unknown earlier this year and scorched Gateway Motorsports Parks’ quarter-mile to the tune of a 5.46 in Q80 Racing win-turbo Pro Mod — the quickest pas in history by a full-bodied car. Now, might the fives on radials be in his sights?
