Having a unique race car is something that can make drag racing fun, because seeing nothing but Camaros, Mustangs, and S-10s at the drag strip can get quite mundane. Some racers set out on a build to see how customized they can make their car, while others find a unique car to start with and go to town. Over on RacingJunk we found a 1951 Studebaker Commander that’s purely distinctive with an over-the-top paint job and big power under the hood, going by the name “Glamorous Gal”.
The Commander was originally found in The Murphy Auto Museum as a custom built drag car named “The Stupidbaker”. Over the years the Stupidbaker was raced all over southern California, deep into the 140 mph range. In 2011, the Stupidbaker had a nasty dust-up with a tire barrier at the top end of a local track and looked to be a total loss. After a massive amount of bodywork, fabrication, and two months in the paint booth, the Glamorous Gal P-51 Mustang-themed race car was born. This amazing World War Two fighter theme pays homage to the 352nd and 332nd Fighter Groups.
But don’t think for one second this classic Studebaker is just built to look good in the lanes, as this machine has some serious rip between the frame rails. Power comes from 570-inch Dart steel block that’s filled with an Eagle Crank and JE Forged pistons. Up top, a pair of Dart Pro-1 heads, Edelbrock intake, and Quick Fuel carb help to convert the E85 fuel into a healthy 970 horsepower.
This spectacular car is for sale as a total race package that includes spare parts, a Dodge truck, and Featherlite trailer to haul it around. So, for cool $125,000 you can have one heck of a custom race car operation that will win best in show and go some rounds at the track anytime you want. Check out the RacingJunk ad for all the details.
