Here it is fresh out of the box, "The Black Car" arrives Sunday afternoon fresh from Texas.
With a new year comes new projects for many shops and this is the latest for the gang at Rockstar Performance in New Port Richey, Florida. After the sale of Big Blue it was really only a matter of days before owner Blair Brannock was on the hunt for a replacement. He found this super clean 90 hatchback out of West Texas where it was running the (West Texas True Ten Five) WTTTF series with owner Mike Reynolds. With a single fogger in the high altitude of West Texas, Mike has been in the 5.4x range so far. Near sea level tracks and adding the second kit will improve substantially on that.
Since Big Blue started out as a nitrous car, it’s only fitting that this one is too, though for now some very different plans are on the table; plans that don’t include turbos. For now we plan to work with Steve Johnson from Induction Solutions on getting it tuned in for the lower altitude and install a progressive controller then run the new X275 class at Sunshine Dragstrip with yours truly behind the wheel both there and select NMCA/NMRA True Street events.

An MSD digital 7 series ignition sends the signals to the MSD distributor while an MSD HVC series coil supplies the spark to Moroso plug wires. Out front we find a CSR electric water pump, Moroso vacuum pump, aluminum radiator and electric fan. Here it is fresh out of the box, "The Black Car" arrives Sunday afternoon fresh from Texas.
The interior is clean and still retains the factory carpet and dash. Auto Meter carbon face gauges monitor the essentials. Below those is a switch panel, digiset timer and fuse block. A B&M ratchet shifter selects the gears in the JW cased powerglide transmission.
The shortblock is a 429 ci. SBF assembled by Texas Speed and Performance with TFS “R” heads and an Edelbrock Super Victor intake ported by Panhandle Performance on top. The Dart Iron Eagle block is filled with an Eagle 4340 stroker crank and H beam rods. Diamond pistons provide the squeeze. The Induction Solutions fogger is currently set for around 250 horsepower and an HP series Holley mixes the air and fuel.
Underneath the rear we find and 8.8 housing filled with 3.73 gears and Aerospace brakes on each end. The double adjustable coil-overs are from QA-1 while the control arms and anti roll are from Team Z Motrosports. Unseen are separate fuel systems with a Magnafuel pump feeding the engine and Aeromotive for the nitrous side.
